Robinder Sachdev Discusses Diminishing American Influence in the Middle East and Rising Tensions

Foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev

New Delhi, India, October 3: Foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev has shared his insights on the changing dynamics in the Middle East, highlighting that American dominance in the region is waning. He pointed out that Iran’s recent attack could lead to an escalation of conflict.

Sachdev noted, “America’s influence seems slightly reduced as its ally, Israel, has not been following its lead. President Biden has been calling for a ceasefire, but Israel did not comply. The broader message to the world is that America’s control or influence is waning.”

He further explained that the immediate consequence of the conflict would be a cycle of retaliation between Iran and Israel, leading to economic disruptions, including fluctuations in crude oil supply and prices.

Regarding India’s concerns, Sachdev emphasized the safety of the Indian diaspora in the region. He mentioned that remittances might decline, and the costs of exports and imports could rise due to the complicated and delicate situation.

On the broader international implications, Sachdev commented, “This is shaping up to be a conflict between Iran and the Shia militia groups in the region versus Israel and the West. The US, Europe, and Israel are standing together. The world is becoming more divided.”

He also mentioned that international institutions like the UN would express concern but are unlikely to take significant action due to a deadlock in the UN Security Council.

Discussing the possibility of diplomatic negotiations, Sachdev said that the chances are slim. He noted that while Iran’s new president is a moderate seeking the lifting of sanctions, Israel opposes any nuclear deal for Iran, which complicates the situation further.

Sachdev also touched on the complex relationships the US has with Middle Eastern partners. He explained that while the US continues to supply arms to Israel, efforts to broker an accord between Saudi Arabia and Israel have fallen apart due to disagreements over the two-state solution.

He concluded by stating that despite these complexities, America’s military relations in the region will persist unless internal revolutions occur in countries like Saudi Arabia or Jordan. He also mentioned that every American president has aimed to solve the Palestinian crisis, and Biden is no different. However, the recent Israel-Hamas conflict has disrupted potential progress in normalizing relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
