Supreme Court Petition Filed Against Gujarat Authorities for Demolition of Historic Muslim Sites

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by Summast Patni Muslim Jamat, represented by advocate Anas Tanwir, seeking contempt proceedings against Gujarat authorities. The petition alleges that the authorities illegally demolished centuries-old Muslim religious sites on September 28, 2024, despite a court order prohibiting such actions without permission.

On September 17, the Supreme Court directed that no demolitions should occur without its permission, except for unauthorized structures in public places or those ordered by a court. However, the petition claims that Gujarat authorities carried out the demolitions without issuing any notices or granting any opportunity for a hearing.

The demolished sites include mosques, dargahs, and tombs of significant historical and spiritual importance to the local Muslim community. These sites, such as Haji Mangroli Shah Baba’s tomb, have been used and revered for over a century.

The petition argues that the actions of the Gujarat authorities have defied the court’s order and disrespected the judicial system, thereby lowering the court’s majesty in the eyes of the public.
