South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Faces Arrest
In a historic move, a Seoul court has approved a warrant to detain former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. This decision follows his impeachment over an attempt to impose martial law. The Seoul Western District Court granted the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) permission to issue the warrant. Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly on December 3, and the court also authorized a search of his presidential residence in Yongsan, Seoul.
The CIO sought the detention warrant after Yoon ignored three summonses for questioning about the martial law attempt. Once detained, the agency has 48 hours to decide on requesting an arrest warrant for extended detention. The court dismissed Yoon's claims that the CIO lacked jurisdiction and that the warrant was illegal. It also rejected his argument about security concerns preventing his attendance at questioning sessions.
Despite presidential immunity, South Korean law allows charges of insurrection or treason. Yoon was impeached on December 14, with the National Assembly voting 204 to 85 in favor. Following impeachment, Yoon was suspended from office.
