On January 12, the Ministry of National Defence (MND) of Taiwan reported the detection of eight aircraft from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and six naval vessels from the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) near Taiwan. As of 6:00 am (UTC+8), seven of these aircraft crossed the median line, entering Taiwan's northern and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). The Ministry shared these details on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "8 PLA aircraft and 6 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 7 of the aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern and southwestern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded accordingly."
Previously, on January 11, the Ministry detected eight PLA aircraft and five PLAN vessels, with four aircraft crossing the median line into Taiwan's ADIZ. This situation is part of the ongoing Taiwan-China conflict, a complex geopolitical issue centered on Taiwan's sovereignty. Taiwan, known as the Republic of China (ROC), functions independently with its own government and military. However, China views Taiwan as a breakaway province under the "One China" policy, aiming for reunification. This has led to decades of tension since the Chinese Civil War, with China applying various pressures to isolate Taiwan internationally.
Taiwan is an island located in East Asia, near China. It has its own government and operates like an independent country, but China claims it as part of its territory.
PLA stands for the People's Liberation Army, which is the armed forces of China. It includes the army, navy, and air force.
PLAN stands for the People's Liberation Army Navy, which is the naval branch of China's military forces.
ADIZ stands for Air Defense Identification Zone. It is an area where a country monitors and controls aircraft to protect its national security.
The median line is an imaginary line in the Taiwan Strait that separates Taiwan and China. It is often used as a boundary to avoid conflicts.
The One China policy is China's stance that there is only one China, and Taiwan is a part of it. China aims to reunify Taiwan with the mainland under this policy.
Sovereignty means having full control and authority over a territory. Taiwan wants to maintain its own sovereignty, while China wants to control it.
