Landslide in Wayanad: PM Modi and Union Minister George Kurien Oversee Rescue Efforts
A massive landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, has resulted in 24 deaths and 70 injuries. Union Minister George Kurien stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the situation, with both state and central governments working together.
Kurien mentioned that the Air Force has reached the site and the Army is on its way. He highlighted the difficulty in reaching the hilly area and the need for helicopters and other assistance. Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan expressed his condolences, noting the challenges faced by rescue teams due to heavy rain and a changed river course.
Prime Minister Modi spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and assured all possible help from the Centre. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the NDRF is conducting search and rescue operations on a war footing, with a second team on its way.
A total of 225 Army personnel have been deployed for rescue operations, and two Air Force helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH, are coordinating the efforts.
