On February 4, Tanmay Lal, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, welcomed Nurlan Yermekbayev, the newly appointed Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), on his first official visit to India. The meeting focused on exploring various avenues of cooperation within the SCO.
Randhir Jaiswal, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, shared on social media that the discussions aimed at enhancing regional cooperation, security, and economic development. Yermekbayev's visit includes meetings with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh. He will also address the Indian Council of World Affairs and pay respects at Rajghat.
Previously, S Jaishankar signed eight outcome documents at the 23rd SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting, emphasizing India's global initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. He stressed the importance of fair connectivity projects that align with international law and the goals of the UN and SCO Charters.
