The India-UK Consultations on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation took place in Delhi on February 4. The discussions covered various topics, including conventional weapons, AI in the military, and multilateral export control regimes.
Both countries talked about developments in disarmament and non-proliferation concerning nuclear, chemical, and biological domains. They also addressed regional non-proliferation issues, outer space security, and conventional weapons.
The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary of Disarmament and International Security Affairs. The UK delegation was led by Stephen Lillie, Director for Defence and International Security at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
The UK is committed to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote peaceful nuclear energy use. Since the Cold War, the UK has dismantled its tactical and air-delivered nuclear weapons, maintaining a single weapon system and reducing its nuclear stockpile.
The UK supports the International Atomic Energy Agency's safeguards system and encourages all states to ratify and implement these agreements.
The NPT is an international treaty that came into force in 1970. It includes commitments from China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US, known as the Nuclear Weapon States (NWS).
Disarmament means reducing or getting rid of weapons, especially dangerous ones like nuclear bombs, to make the world safer.
Non-Proliferation is about stopping the spread of weapons, especially nuclear weapons, to more countries or groups.
Conventional weapons are regular weapons like guns, tanks, and planes, not nuclear or chemical ones.
AI in the military means using computers and robots to help with military tasks, like flying drones or analyzing data.
These are international agreements where countries work together to control the export of weapons and technology to prevent them from being used for bad purposes.
NPT stands for the Non-Proliferation Treaty, an agreement to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
IAEA stands for the International Atomic Energy Agency, which helps countries use nuclear energy safely and ensures nuclear materials are not used for weapons.
Outer Space Security involves making sure that space is used peacefully and that no weapons are placed in space.
