He emphasized efforts to further strengthen this partnership and thanked Ambassador Achoui for his lasting contribution.
Diplomatic ties between India and Algeria were formally established in July 1962, the same year Algeria gained independence from French colonial rule. India's support for Algeria dates back to the Algerian liberation movement, with the National Liberation Front (FLN) maintaining an office in India during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Both countries became prominent members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) after independence, reinforcing their cooperation as developing nations.
Currently, around 3,800 Indians work in Algeria, contributing to various projects and industries. The Indian community includes highly skilled professionals and semi-skilled workers. Additionally, there are 13 Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cardholders, 10 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and 15 Indian students in Algeria. Bilateral trade has seen fluctuations, peaking at USD 2.9 billion in 2018, dropping to USD 1.5 billion in 2021, and rebounding by 24% in 2022 to USD 2.1 billion. Indian exports to Algeria increased from USD 613 million in 2022-23 to USD 848.16 million in 2023-24.
