US Seizes Venezuelan Aircraft: Marco Rubio Vows to Enforce Sanctions
The United States has taken action against a Venezuelan aircraft involved in violating US export control and sanctions laws. The aircraft, a Dassault Falcon 2000EX, was seized by Dominican Republic authorities at the request of the US government. It was used by Petroleos de Venezuela, SA (PdVSA), a sanctioned Venezuelan state-owned oil and gas company.
Rubio highlighted the seizure as a demonstration of the US's resolve to hold Nicolas Maduro's regime accountable for illegal activities. He praised the cooperation between the US, the Dominican Republic, and regional partners in disrupting sanctions evasion schemes. Rubio stated, "The seizure of this Venezuelan aircraft, used for evading US sanctions and money laundering, is a powerful example of our resolve to hold the illegitimate Maduro regime accountable for its illegal actions."
The US Department of Justice is actively working to dismantle schemes that violate US sanctions and export control laws. Devin DeBacker, head of the Justice Department's National Security Division, stressed the importance of preventing the use of American-made parts in aircraft operated by sanctioned entities like PdVSA. The Justice Department previously seized another aircraft in the Dominican Republic linked to Nicolas Maduro and his affiliates.
The US, along with the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada, does not recognize Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate leader and has imposed sanctions on officials aligned with him. The US has no diplomatic presence in Venezuela. This move aligns with Rubio's recent travels to several countries to advance President Trump's America First foreign policy.
