US Congressman Rich McCormick Speaks on Bangladesh Unrest

Washington, DC [US], August 8: US Congressman Rich McCormick has expressed his concern over the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh. He is particularly disturbed by reports of violence against the Hindu minority in the country. McCormick shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “I’m praying that the people of Bangladesh will know peace and stability again soon. I’m deeply disturbed by the reports of sectarian violence targeting members of the Hindu minority and will work with my colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to help promote a peaceful democratic transition in Bangladesh.”

Political Changes in Bangladesh

On August 5, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid mounting protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs. These protests evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations.

Following Hasina’s resignation, President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament to pave the way for an interim administration. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of this interim government. In a statement, Yunus urged everyone to stay calm and avoid violence, emphasizing the need to protect and improve the country for future generations.

Formation of the Interim Government

The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, is expected to have 15 members, although their names have not yet been disclosed. The members will take their oaths on Thursday night.
