Washington DC, February 12: Indian-American US Congressman Shri Thanedar highlighted important topics ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with US President Donald Trump. He emphasized that tariffs, trade, bilateral ties, and immigration are crucial issues to be addressed.
"This is an exciting time. PM Modi and Donald Trump have met two times before... I am looking forward to this meeting... There are a lot of issues that need to be talked about. The tariff is a big issue, the bilateral relationship, commerce, immigration issue, there are so many things going on... I hope a lot can get done," Thanedar said.
Dhruva Jaishankar, Executive Director of the Observer Research Foundation America, suggested that an agreement might be reached to prevent a trade dispute between India and the US. He mentioned the possibility of an agreement on tariffs to avoid a tit-for-tat trade dispute.
Jaishankar also addressed the issue of illegal Indian immigrants and deportations by the US, stating that India is willing to take back identified undocumented migrants. He noted that this policy is not new but has been perceived negatively in India.
Thanedar expressed hope that the Bangladesh issue would be discussed during the meeting, mentioning previous sanctions issued by the State Department under President Biden.
PM Modi's visit to the US on February 12-13 marks the first meeting between the two leaders since President Trump began his second term.
