A devastating stampede at a religious event in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, has resulted in the loss of at least 116 lives and left 18 others injured. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has promised a thorough investigation to determine whether the incident was an accident or a conspiracy.

Details of the Incident

Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V confirmed the casualties and stated that the injured are receiving treatment in Aligarh district. The stampede occurred when a crowd of devotees rushed towards a preacher after a ‘Bhole Baba’ program, leading to chaos when the ‘sevadars’ tried to stop them.

Government Response

CM Yogi Adityanath emphasized the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth and has formed a team led by Additional DG Agra to investigate. The Chief Secretary, DGP, and three state ministers are also on-site. The government has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured.

Condolences and Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed their deep sorrow and condolences. President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her heartfelt condolences and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. Opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav called for sensitive government support and questioned the preparedness for such events.

Current Status

Aligarh District Magistrate Vishak reported that 23 bodies have been received in Aligarh, with 15 at Aligarh Medical College, 6 at Malkhan Singh Hospital, and 2 at the PM House. The investigation is ongoing, and the government is focused on providing all possible help to the victims.
