Students Manage Traffic in Dhaka After Sheikh Hasina Resigns, Muhammad Yunus Leads Interim Government
The streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh, are witnessing a unique scene. Dozens of students have taken on the task of managing traffic in the capital city. This comes after violent protests led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the formation of an interim government headed by Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Protests and Resignation
The protests began with demands for a revised quota system and saw thousands of students from various universities and educational institutions taking to the streets. The demonstrations, which lasted for months, resulted in several deaths and ultimately led to Hasina’s resignation on August 5.
Interim Government
Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government on August 8. The students, now managing traffic outside the Bangladesh Parliament, hope that the new government will address their demands and work towards making Bangladesh a democratic nation.
Student Volunteers
Students from diverse backgrounds, including engineering and medical fields, are volunteering to manage the traffic. Bashir, a student volunteer, mentioned that since universities and schools are currently closed, students have stepped in to help. He also emphasized the need for elections in Bangladesh.
“We are more than 50 students managing traffic here. Police will also come and manage it as we also have to return to our studies. At the moment, the schools and colleges are closed, but police will come soon,” Bashir said.
Protesters believe that their efforts, which initially seemed ignored, may now receive the attention they deserve from the new interim government.
