Sharjah Public Libraries Celebrates 100 Years of Cultural Contributions
Sharjah, UAE, is celebrating a century of cultural and intellectual achievements through its Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL). This celebration is directed by Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and supervised by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA). The event will take place at Sharjah Fort on January 29th, marking 100 years since the establishment of the UAE's first public library in 1925.
The SPL, renamed in 2011, has been a cornerstone of Sharjah's cultural journey. The centennial celebration includes a year-long agenda with activities structured around four themes: 'Literary Beginnings', 'Cultural Civilisation', 'Horizons of Literature and Poetry', and 'Cultural Sustainability'. These activities are in collaboration with over 13 government entities.
Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi highlighted the SPL's evolution as a symbol of cultural progress in the UAE. She emphasized the role of libraries in empowering communities and serving as resources for knowledge. She stated, "Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi has instilled in us the belief that books and knowledge are the bedrock of thriving nations."
The SPL's history began with its establishment by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi in 1925. It has moved locations several times, reflecting its growth and importance. Today, it stands as a testament to Sharjah's commitment to cultural heritage and future development.
