Rakesh Thakur and Other Candidates Cast Votes in Jammu and Kashmir Elections
Rakesh Thakur, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Ramban assembly constituency, cast his vote on Monday. He expressed confidence that the BJP government will be formed in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the development work after the abrogation of Article 370.
Thakur said, “After the abrogation of Article 370, a lot of development has taken place in Jammu and Kashmir and we went among the people with those development works in the elections… BJP government will be formed in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Suraj Singh Parihar, an independent candidate from the Ramban Assembly constituency, also cast his vote. He urged everyone to come out in large numbers and vote for the development of Ramban.
Sajad Shaheen, the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference candidate from the Banihal Assembly constituency, cast his vote and noted that the atmosphere is very positive. He said, “We are getting a lot of support from the public…I am hopeful that we will win with a thumping majority.”
As of 1 pm, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a 41.17% turnout in the first phase of polls. Kishtwar recorded a 56.86% turnout, followed by Doda with 50.81%, Ramban with 49.68%, Kulgam with 39.91%, Shopian with 38.72%, Anantnag with 37.90%, and Pulwama with 29.84%.
Voting, which started at 7 am, is ongoing across the Union Territory and will conclude at 6 pm. Voting was briefly halted at a polling station in Bagwan Mohalla, Kishtwar due to a protest over voter identification, but it has since resumed. Kishtwar DM Rajesh Kumar Shavan clarified that it was a confusion and the situation is now normal.
In the first phase, 24 assembly constituencies across the Union Territory are voting, including 16 seats in the Kashmir region and 8 seats in the Jammu region. The second and third phases of voting will be held on September 25 and October 1, respectively, with vote counting on October 8.
