Rajib Bhattacharjee and Sudhan Das Compete in Tripura Rajya Sabha By-Elections

Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee has filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha by-elections in Tripura, which are scheduled for September 3, 2024. The filing took place in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha, other MLAs, and NDA members at the State Election Commission.

Speaking about his nomination, Bhattacharjee said, “The Rajya Sabha by-election is going to be held on 3rd September. So, my name has been nominated by the BJP for Rajya Sabha and I have filed my nomination today. I thank our country’s PM Narendra Modi, our national president JP Nadda and our Home Minister Amit Shah for giving a chance to an ordinary worker like me… I also appeal to the MLAs of the opposition party to give me a chance once on the issue of the development of Tripura.”

Chief Minister Manik Saha shared his support on social media, stating, “Hon’ble Ministers, MLAs, and NDA partners stand together as Shri Rajib Bhattacharjee, State President, BJP-Tripura Pradesh, files his nomination for Rajya Sabha By-Poll. Wishing him a successful journey ahead.”

On the other hand, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tripura State Committee has decided to field former MLA Sudhan Das for the by-election. CPI(M) Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury announced, “Communist Party of India (Marxist), Tripura State Committee has decided to field former MLA Sudhan Das (64) to the By-Election of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) from Tripura for which election is scheduled on the 3rd day of September 2024.”

Das is a prominent Dalit leader and General Secretary of Tripura Tapashili Jati Samanyaya Samiti. He has served as an MLA from Rajnagar (SC) Assembly Constituency, South Tripura, six times.

The Rajya Sabha seat became vacant after Biplab Kumar Deb resigned to contest and win the West Tripura Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections. The Election Commission has announced September 3 as the date for elections for 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats across various states, including Tripura.
