Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], August 19: Amid the ongoing uproar over the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has made several demands and suggestions. He called for capital punishment for the accused and urged both the Central and state governments to announce an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 crore to the victim’s family.

Singh stated, “A meeting of all the medical professional bodies was held to call for justice and strict punishment for those responsible. The accused should be sentenced to death. The Central and state governments should announce an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 crore to the next of kin of the deceased.”

He also proposed a new law, ‘prevention of violence against medical personnel,’ and called on the Prime Minister to ensure its introduction in the next session. Singh announced that more security personnel would be deployed and CCTV cameras installed to cover all dark spots within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team inspected various areas of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of their investigation. The CBI has received permission to conduct a polygraph test on the arrested suspect. On August 18, the CBI conducted 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of the hospital.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and protests, with calls for justice and punishment for the accused. The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, will hear the case on August 20.
