Protests Erupt in Kolkata Over CBI's Handling of Abhaya Rape and Murder Case

In Kolkata, West Bengal, a group called Abhaya Manch staged a protest on Saturday, burning an effigy to express their dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The protest was in response to a court granting bail to Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, in the Kolkata rape and murder case.

One protester emphasized the need for justice for Abhaya, criticizing the CBI for not filing a chargesheet. The protests are set to continue until justice is achieved. The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) also held a rally against the bail decision.

The CBI's failure to file a chargesheet within 90 days led to the bail of Ghosh and Mondal. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh commented on the case, stating that it had been sensationalized and that the main accused was arrested by Kolkata police within 24 hours.

Earlier, junior doctors and nurses protested outside the CBI office, opposing the bail. The victim's father expressed disappointment, noting that protests had previously spurred CBI action. He urged for stronger protests to ensure justice.

The case involves the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was found on August 9. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested shortly after. On November 29, the CBI filed a chargesheet for financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, naming Sandip Ghosh and others. Sanjay Roy, the main suspect, denied the charges, alleging a conspiracy by former police officials.
