In a dramatic incident at Sanaa International Airport in Yemen, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly avoided an aerial attack. The attack, which occurred as Tedros and his team were about to board a flight, resulted in the deaths of at least two people and injured a crew member.
Tedros, who was in Yemen to negotiate the release of United Nations (UN) staff detainees and assess the health and humanitarian situation, expressed his condolences to the victims' families. He shared on social media that the airport's air traffic control tower, departure lounge, and runway were damaged, delaying their departure.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, urging respect for international law and emphasizing the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers. He also expressed concern over the escalating conflict between Yemen and Israel, highlighting the alarming nature of the airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport and other key locations.
The Israel Defence Force (IDF) confirmed that the Israeli Air Force targeted Houthi military infrastructure, including the airport and power stations, as part of their military operations.
