PPP’s Nayyar Hussain Bukhari Calls for New Elections if PM Shehbaz Sharif Dissolves Parliament
Islamabad [Pakistan], August 5: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari announced that his party is prepared to hold fresh elections if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decides to dissolve the lower house of parliament. This statement comes amid growing frustration within the federal government over the Supreme Court’s delayed verdict on reserved seats, which could threaten the ruling coalition’s majority in the National Assembly.
Speaking to a private news channel, Bukhari emphasized that if there is any danger, the Prime Minister should consider dissolving parliament and calling for new elections. He criticized the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership for not providing necessary details to the PPP and expressed the PPP’s willingness to support the PML-N in parliament, provided the ruling party delivers on its promises.
Bukhari also criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its founder, Imran Khan, calling him an untrustworthy politician who frequently changes his stance. He mentioned that former President Asif Ali Zardari had offered to mediate political disputes, but PTI showed no willingness to engage in talks.
Concerns have been raised following the Supreme Court’s ruling on reserved seats, which has reinstated PTI members in the national and provincial assemblies. Federal Information Minister Ataullah Tarar voiced concerns over the delay in the detailed verdict and called for discussions on the dissenting note of two judges. The Supreme Court’s decision declared PTI eligible for reserved seats, overturning previous decisions by the Peshawar High Court and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Since the ruling, the Election Commission has notified 39 out of 80 Members of the National Assembly as PTI members, along with 93 lawmakers in the provincial assemblies. The PML-N and PPP have filed review pleas on the court’s order, seeking further legal and constitutional guidance.
