Philippine Coast Guard accuses China of AIS spoofing to stir public alarm in Zambales
Philippine Coast Guard Accuses China of AIS Spoofing
Concerns Raised in San Felipe, Zambales
Commodore Jay Tarriela of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has accused China of using automatic identification system (AIS) spoofing to mislead the international community. AIS spoofing involves altering data to confuse maritime vessels and monitoring systems. This accusation follows concerns from San Felipe, Zambales residents about a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel near a dredging site.
China's Actions Jeopardizing Maritime Safety
Tarriela criticized China's actions as ironic, given their disregard for the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. He noted that the CCG-21543 vessel's 60-day track was unrealistic, suggesting AIS signals from other vessels were being exploited. He also mentioned the use of dredgers in the Philippines to facilitate AIS manipulation.
Response and Investigation
Cmdr. Euphraim Jayson Diciano of the PCG in Zambales reassured the public of close monitoring of all vessels, suggesting a technical malfunction might have caused the detection of the CCG vessel. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is working with the PCG to investigate these activities.
Ongoing Tensions in the South China Sea

China claims most of the sea based on its "nine-dash line," while the Philippines relies on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) rights.
