The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently participated in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The event, held from December 2 to 13, focused on transforming land degradation into renewal under the theme "Our Land. Our Future."
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the UAE's Minister of Climate Change and Environment, led the UAE delegation. She emphasized the UAE's commitment to sustainability and its role as a global leader in sustainable land management. The UAE highlighted its efforts in sustainable agriculture, food systems, and water management, including initiatives like the 'Mohammed bin Zayed Water Initiative.'
The UAE stressed the importance of involving all community groups, especially women, in sustainable land management. Hiba Obaid Al Shehhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Biodiversity and Marine Life Sector, highlighted the UAE's efforts to empower women in agriculture and their role in combating climate change.
Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, discussed the challenges of water scarcity in the Arab region and the need for regional cooperation. He highlighted the 'Plant the Emirates' National Programme and the 'National Agriculture Centre' as key initiatives.
The UAE also launched the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) with Indonesia, aiming to expand mangrove forests globally. This initiative aligns with global frameworks like the UNCCD and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
