This accusation was made in a Facebook post following a High Court order for Levin to convene the Judicial Selection Committee by January 16 to appoint a new court president.
Levin criticized the court's actions, calling the justices "dictators" and expressing uncertainty about complying with the ruling. He argued that the court's decision to continue its activities during wartime was irresponsible. Former State Attorney Moshe Lador supported this view, suggesting that reservists have the right to refuse service to protest against what he described as a shift towards dictatorship.
The judicial appointments have been stalled for two years due to a controversial reform initiative led by Levin. This initiative, which was paused after the formation of a unity government, aims to change the appointment and removal process of judges, allow the Knesset to override certain High Court rulings, and alter the appointment of legal advisors to government ministries.
Supporters of the reform argue it addresses judicial overreach, while opponents see it as anti-democratic. The retirement of Supreme Court President Esther Hayut and Justice Anat Baron in October 2023 left the court short of three justices. Justice Yitzhak Amit is currently the Acting Court President, but Levin seeks to appoint the more conservative Justice Yosef Elron.
