Japanese and Chinese Foreign Ministers Meet in Beijing
On December 26, Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. Their discussions covered a range of topics, including economic cooperation, security concerns in the East and South China Seas, and global challenges like Taiwan, Ukraine, and North Korea.
Focus on Cooperation and Stability
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that both ministers agreed to promote a "Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests" and to build "constructive and stable Japan-China relations." They committed to reducing issues and increasing cooperation through communication at various levels.
Concerns Raised by Japan
Minister Iwaya expressed serious concerns about the East China Sea, particularly the Senkaku Islands, Chinese military activities, and unilateral resource development. He urged China to address these issues. Concerns about the South China Sea and Taiwan were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Regional and Global Issues
The ministers exchanged views on regional issues, including the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, and North Korea's nuclear and missile issues. They reaffirmed their responsibility for regional peace and prosperity and agreed to engage in dialogue on these matters.
This visit marked Iwaya's first trip to China as Japan's top diplomat, following the last visit by a Japanese foreign minister in April 2023.
