Indian Navy's Heroic Efforts in the Arabian Sea
The Indian Navy has been actively ensuring maritime security in the Western Arabian Sea. Over the past year, they deployed more than 30 ships to tackle over 25 incidents of Houthi shipping attacks and piracy. These operations have saved over 400 lives and safely escorted over 230 merchant vessels, protecting cargo worth over four billion USD.
Mission-Based Deployments
The Navy maintained a continuous presence in critical areas of the Indian Ocean Region, including the Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea. These efforts align with India's vision of 'Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR),' focusing on maritime security and humanitarian assistance.
Anti-Piracy and Anti-Narcotics Operations
In response to piracy, the Navy launched several operations, deploying 127 ships in the Gulf of Aden since 2008 and starting operations in the Gulf of Guinea in 2022. They also conducted 13 anti-narcotics operations, seizing drugs worth approximately Rs 35,000 crore, including a record 3,300 kgs of narcotics in February 2024.
International Naval Exercises
The Indian Navy participated in multinational exercises like Exercise Malabar with Australia, Japan, and the US, RIMPAC at Pearl Harbour, and Exercise Varuna in the Mediterranean Sea. They also engaged in the JIMEX maritime exercise with Japan and Exercise Indra with Russia, strengthening international naval partnerships.
