New Delhi, India – Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness is on an official visit to India from September 30 to October 3. This is his first visit to India and the first-ever bilateral visit of a Jamaican Prime Minister to the country.

Strengthening Cooperation

Prime Minister Holness expressed Jamaica’s desire to strengthen cooperation with India in various sectors, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), education, digitalisation, security, and energy. He praised India’s advancements in these areas and expressed interest in learning from India’s technological progress.

Focus on Security

Holness highlighted Jamaica’s interest in India’s technology-driven security solutions to enhance national and border security. He sees India as a natural ally in this effort.

Energy Collaboration

On energy security, Holness noted that both countries share the goal of diversifying their energy mix by 2030. He announced Jamaica’s intention to join the Global Biofuels Alliance, pioneered by India.

Climate Change and Resilience

Holness emphasized Jamaica’s vulnerability to climate change and expressed support for initiatives like the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), both supported by India.

Meeting with PM Modi

During his visit, Prime Minister Holness met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. They held a bilateral meeting followed by delegation-level talks. The two countries share strong historical and cultural ties, including a shared colonial past, democratic values, and a passion for cricket.
