Israel's Transportation Revitalization in Gaza Border Communities
Israel's Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety has announced a significant investment in the communities surrounding Gaza. This initiative is part of a revitalization project aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure in the western Negev region, particularly in areas affected by the October 7 terrorist attacks.
Investment Details
The total investment is projected to be around 28.5 billion Shekels (USD 7.81 billion). Of this, approximately 5 billion Shekels (USD 1.37 billion) are allocated for the Tkuma region near Gaza. The project focuses on restoring and upgrading transportation infrastructure that was damaged during battles and IDF activities, with a strong emphasis on improving road safety and security.
Budget Allocation
As part of the 2024-2025 budget, about 850 million Shekels (USD 233 million) have been approved for the Tkuma region. Of this, 240 million Shekels (USD 66 million) are set for immediate use, and an additional 100 million Shekels (USD 27.4 million) are planned for the 2025 budget.
Project Scope
The projects include infrastructure rehabilitation, road paving and expansion, intersection improvements, lighting, safety upgrades, bicycle paths, and enhanced public transportation services. These developments will take place in the city of Sderot and the regional councils of Eshkol, Sdot Negev, Shaar Negev, and Ashkelon Beach.
