The Philippines has deployed its vessels and aircraft to monitor a large Chinese Coast Guard ship near Luzon Island. This ship, known as "The Monster," is the largest in the world and weighs 12,000 tons. It was last seen 54 nautical miles from Capones Island in the South China Sea.
Filipino officials are concerned about the ship's presence, viewing it as a threat within Philippine waters. Jonathan Malaya, assistant director general of the National Security Council, described the situation as intimidation and aggression against the Philippines. He stated that any provocative actions would be met with an appropriate response, though he did not provide details.
The ship's arrival at Scarborough Shoal, a disputed area within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, has increased tensions. Scarborough Shoal is claimed by China, the Philippines, and Taiwan, but has been under Chinese control since 2012. The Chinese embassy in Manila has not responded to inquiries, but continues to assert authority over the area.
The Philippine Coast Guard, with its vessel BRP Cabra and an aircraft, is closely monitoring the Chinese ship and challenging it via radio. Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesperson, noted that the ship's movements suggest it is conducting a "law enforcement operation."
