India and US to Discuss Large Trade Deal During PM Modi's Visit
Former US official Mark Linscott highlighted the significant potential for a large trade deal between India and the US during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States. Linscott, who is a Senior Advisor on Trade and a former Assistant US Trade Representative, expressed optimism about the negotiations despite potential challenges such as disruptions and tariff threats.
During an interview, Linscott stated, "There is tremendous potential and I think that during PM Modi's visit, the two sides will agree to start the negotiation...covering the full range of trade issues, I'm very optimistic...It will be challenging negotiations, difficult times, some disruptions, and there likely will be threats of tariffs, some new tariffs, it will be complicated and that's true of many trade negotiations...but I do think they would conclude on quite a large trade deal."
Prime Minister Modi is visiting the US at the invitation of President Donald Trump. This marks Modi's first visit to the US since Trump began his second term. Modi will be staying at the Blair House, a historic guest lodging for dignitaries visiting the White House.
Before his departure, PM Modi expressed his intention to build on the successes of his first term and further deepen the partnership between India and the US. He emphasized collaboration in areas such as technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience.
Since November 2024, PM Modi and President Trump have communicated twice by phone. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended Trump's inauguration and met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the QUAD Foreign Ministers' meeting in January 2025.
