Human Rights Watch Calls for Fair Security Measures in Bangladesh
Human Rights Watch (HRW), a global human rights organization, has urged Bangladesh's interim government to ensure that security forces act fairly and uphold the law amidst political unrest. A recent United Nations report highlighted severe human rights abuses by law enforcement, including extrajudicial killings and mass arrests, following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
UN Report Findings
The report revealed that law enforcement agencies, such as the police and Rapid Action Battalion, committed serious violations to control protests. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has promised security reforms but has also launched "Operation Devil Hunt," arresting nearly 2,000 people, mostly supporters of the ousted Awami League government.
HRW's Concerns
Meenakshi Ganguly, HRW's deputy Asia director, emphasized the need for impartial law enforcement and urged the interim government to focus on political and economic reforms. The UN report estimated that up to 1,400 people were killed by security forces between July 1 and August 15.
