Starting January 1, 2025, Gazprom, a major Russian energy company, will stop supplying natural gas to Moldova. This decision comes after Moldova failed to settle its debts for gas deliveries, which Gazprom claims is a violation of their contract. The company has informed Moldovagaz, a key player in Moldova's energy sector, about this decision.
Gazprom stated that the gas supply will be reduced to zero cubic meters per day from 8:00 am Moscow time on January 1, 2025. This restriction will remain until Gazprom decides otherwise. The company also mentioned that it might terminate the contract and seek compensation for damages due to Moldova's non-compliance.
In late 2022, Moldova experienced power outages due to Russian strikes on Ukraine, affecting the Kuciurgan plant. Moldova, heavily reliant on Russian gas, declared a state of emergency in its energy sector in December 2022. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed concerns that Russia might use energy supplies to destabilize Moldova, potentially leaving citizens without heat and electricity during winter.
