The Washington Post article, based on a document titled "Democratic Renewal Initiative," claimed that opposition politicians proposed bribing 40 parliament members, including those from Muizzu's party, to vote for his impeachment. The document also suggested paying senior army and police officers and criminal gangs to ensure Muizzu's removal, seeking 87 million Maldivian rufiyaa (USD 6 million) from India.
The report further alleged that a senior officer from India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) explored a plan to overthrow President Muizzu. This plan involved two Indian intermediaries, Shirish Thorat and Savio Rodrigues, who confirmed the existence of such plans but did not disclose if they were acting on behalf of the Indian government. However, it remains unclear how seriously India considered the impeachment scheme or if it was approved by senior officials.
