Donald Trump urges NATO nations to increase defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP
Donald Trump Urges NATO to Boost Defense Spending at Davos Forum
In Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump addressed the World Economic Forum, urging NATO countries to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP. He emphasized that the US has been bearing an unfair share of global defense costs, especially in the Ukraine conflict, where the US has spent $200 billion more than NATO. Trump highlighted the need for NATO to equalize contributions, stating, "NATO has to pay 5 percent. We are in the Ukraine war with USD 200 billion more than NATO."
Trump also discussed international issues, including urging Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower oil prices, addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and highlighting US policies like deploying troops to curb illegal immigration. He mentioned ceasefire negotiations in West Asia, noting his administration's efforts in the Middle East. "Before even taking office, my team negotiated the ceasefire agreement in the Middle East," Trump said, adding that hostages have begun returning home.
The summit in Davos, held from January 20 to 24, serves as a platform to discuss global challenges, economic changes, and sustainability goals.
