Donald Trump Cleared of Charges as He Prepares for Presidency
In Washington DC, a US federal judge has dismissed charges against former President Donald Trump, who was accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election results. This decision follows a request from special counsel Jack Smith, who cited Justice Department policy that prevents prosecuting a sitting president. Trump, who recently won the presidential election against Kamala Harris, will be inaugurated as the 47th president on January 20. The charges related to the alleged illegal handling of classified documents at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence have also been dropped. Trump had pleaded not guilty in both cases.
Special Prosecutor Jack Smith stated that the charges were dismissed due to constitutional prohibitions on indicting a sitting president. However, the case could be reopened after Trump's term ends in 2029. Trump's spokesman, Steven Cheung, called the decision a victory for the rule of law and criticized the political nature of the charges. Trump himself expressed relief on his Truth Social platform, condemning the cases as politically motivated.
Despite these dismissals, Trump still faces legal challenges in Georgia and New York. In New York, his sentencing for a criminal hush money case has been postponed indefinitely. Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a payment made during the 2016 campaign. In Georgia, Trump is involved in a case accusing him of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.
