New Delhi [India], July 29: The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, announced the start of a six-day Special Lok Adalat on Monday. This initiative aims to settle small cases and was termed a historic day by senior advocate Kapil Sibal.
The Lok Adalat is being held throughout the week by seven benches of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted that the goal is to settle small cases, which often come before the Supreme Court. These include service disputes, labor disputes, land acquisition cases, motor accident claims, and cheque dishonor cases.
Parties involved in these cases were contacted in advance by district legal service authorities, and pre-Lok Adalat sittings were held to facilitate settlements. The presence of both Bar members and judges in the Lok Adalat panel sends a strong message of unity in the pursuit of justice.
Chief Justice Chandrachud shared an example of a couple who decided to live together happily after attending a pre-Lok Adalat sitting, resolving their divorce and maintenance disputes amicably.
Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal congratulated Chief Justice Chandrachud for this initiative, calling it a historic day. He emphasized that the Court's effort to reach out to people with small matters shows its commitment to justice, especially for those who cannot afford prolonged litigation.
