Challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Healthcare System Under PTI Governance
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan, the healthcare system continues to struggle despite over a decade of governance by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Promised improvements have not been realized, leaving many residents without basic medical care. In 2024, the provincial government declared a health emergency, but initiatives like the Sehat Sahulat Card faced inefficiencies, with hospitals lacking services.
The KP government allocated PKR 232 billion for health in 2024, including PKR 35.76 billion for development. However, only 15% of the budget was used by mid-year. The air ambulance project also faced delays. The Sehat Sahulat Card, with PKR 35 billion allocated, struggled with unpaid dues, affecting its impact.
An anonymous health official revealed that despite budget allocations, healthcare services often fell short. Patients with serious conditions struggled to access treatment, and many areas lacked basic health facilities, forcing travel to Peshawar.
The Health Department K-P oversees 120 projects under the Annual Development Program (ADP), with a budget of PKR 19.79 billion. While 89% of released funds have been used, many projects remain incomplete. The official emphasized the need for a comprehensive health policy for 2025 to address the crisis.
