Taiwan Condemns China's Issuance of ID Cards to Taiwanese Citizens
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has criticized China's move to issue Chinese ID cards to Taiwanese citizens. MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng stated that this is an attempt by China to create an illusion of legal sovereignty over Taiwan. The controversy arose from a video featuring YouTuber Pa Chiung and Lin Jincheng, who claimed that 200,000 Taiwanese have obtained Chinese ID cards in the past decade. Chiu noted that the government cannot verify these figures but is addressing the issue cautiously.
Over the last ten years, 679 Taiwanese have had their documents invalidated after acquiring Chinese IDs or passports. Chiu warned about the lack of personal data protection in China and advised against applying for Chinese IDs. Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior is handling cases of local officials with Chinese nationality according to Taiwanese laws, identifying five such cases.
The Ministry clarified that Chinese nationals married to Taiwanese citizens must renounce their foreign citizenship to participate in politics. This led to the dismissal of former Nantou County Councillor Shi Xueyan for not renouncing her Chinese nationality. Minister Liu Shyh-fang emphasized that elected officials must hold only Taiwanese citizenship.
The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) criticized the government's actions, claiming it strips political rights from 300,000 Chinese spouses. KMT Legislator Weng Hsiao-ling argued that all Chinese should be considered Taiwanese nationals. However, MAC Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh defended the government's actions as legally compliant. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) warned against sharing personal data with China due to concerns over biometric data security.
