St John’s [Antigua], June 23: West Indies cricket legend Vivian Richards awarded Suryakumar Yadav the ‘Fielder of the Match’ medal after India’s 50-run victory over Bangladesh in the ICC T20 World Cup Super Eights match on Saturday.

India’s win was marked by Hardik Pandya’s all-round performance and Kuldeep Yadav’s impressive bowling. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video of the medal ceremony, which took place in the dressing room.

Fielding Coach’s Praise

Fielding coach T Dilip praised the team’s relentless fielding efforts, highlighting their determination to win. He named Suryakumar Yadav, Axar Patel, and Rohit Sharma as contenders for the medal. Ultimately, Suryakumar Yadav received the medal from Viv Richards for his excellent diving catch that dismissed Litton Das.

Viv Richards’ Support

Viv Richards expressed his happiness with India’s performance and stated that if his West Indies team doesn’t win, he will support India to end their 11-year ICC trophy drought. He also praised Rishabh Pant for his comeback after a serious car accident in 2022.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Reaction

After receiving the medal, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his joy and credited fielding coach Dilip for their hard work. He mentioned that Mohamed Siraj set a high benchmark for fielding from the first game.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field. India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had a strong start, but early wickets left India at 77/3. Contributions from Rishabh Pant, Shivam Dube, and Hardik Pandya helped India reach 196/5. In response, Bangladesh struggled despite efforts from Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tanzid Hasan, and Rashid Hossain, finishing at 146/8. Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh were the top bowlers for India, with Pandya also taking a wicket and earning the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

With this win, India is closer to the semifinals, while Bangladesh is out of contention.
