Uyghur Refugees in Bangkok on Hunger Strike to Avoid Deportation to China
In Munich, Germany, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has raised concerns about 48 Uyghur refugees in Bangkok who are on a hunger strike, now in its 15th day, to avoid deportation to China. These refugees fled East Turkistan in 2014 to escape persecution and face severe consequences if returned to China, where they risk human rights violations.
The hunger strike began on January 10 after the refugees learned of their potential deportation. They demand a meeting with UNHCR officials, but Thai authorities have not yet responded. The international community, including the United Nations and European Union, has expressed concern over China's treatment of Uyghurs, which includes arbitrary detention and forced labor.
The WUC has urged the Thai government to stop any deportations and called for international intervention to ensure the refugees' safety. United Nations experts have also called on Thailand to suspend the deportation, warning of the risk of torture and other inhumane treatment if the refugees are returned to China.
