Karachi and Other Districts at Risk
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a drought alert for several districts in Sindh, including Karachi, due to a significant 52% decrease in rainfall this season. This dry spell is expected to continue through February and March, raising concerns about worsening drought conditions.
Areas at High Risk
Districts such as Naushahro Feroze, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Jamshoro are at high risk. The PMD has advised deputy commissioners in Karachi to make alternative arrangements and district administrations in Khairpur and Tharparkar to take precautionary measures.
Rainfall Deficit
From September 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, Pakistan experienced 40% less rainfall than usual. Despite recent rains, they were insufficient in the plain areas, worsening the drought. Balochistan received 45% less rainfall, while Punjab received 42% less.
Future Outlook
The PMD warns that mild drought-like conditions have emerged and are likely to worsen, with no significant rainfall expected in the rain-fed areas of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan. The second half of the season is forecasted to be drier, with above-normal temperatures potentially turning mild drought conditions into moderate drought.
