The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that it has received enough petitions to meet the congressionally mandated limits for H-1B visas for the fiscal year 2025. The agency has reached the 65,000-visa regular cap and the 20,000-visa US advanced degree exemption, also known as the master's cap.
In a post on X, USCIS stated that they have received the necessary number of petitions to meet these caps. Non-selection notices will be sent out in the coming days. Once the notifications are sent, the status for registrations that were properly submitted but not selected will be updated to 'Not Selected' in the registrants' online accounts.
USCIS will continue to process H-1B petitions that are exempt from the cap. This includes applications for current H-1B workers seeking extensions, changes in employment terms, or transfers to new employers. Workers who have been counted against the cap in previous years and retain their cap numbers are not subject to the FY 2025 limit.
The H-1B program allows US businesses to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. USCIS encourages petitioners to subscribe to updates on the H-1B cap season through their H-1B Cap Season webpage.
USCIS will keep accepting and processing petitions to extend the stay of current H-1B workers, change their employment terms, allow them to change employers, and work concurrently in additional H-1B positions.
USCIS stands for United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. It is a government agency in the US that handles immigration and citizenship matters.
The H-1B visa is a special permission that allows people from other countries to work in the US in jobs that need special skills, like technology or engineering.
FY 2025 means Fiscal Year 2025. A fiscal year is a 12-month period used for budgeting and financial purposes, and it might not start in January.
A visa cap is the maximum number of visas that can be given out in a year. For H-1B visas, there is a limit set by the US Congress.
The regular cap is the limit of 65,000 H-1B visas that can be given to workers with a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
The master's cap is an additional 20,000 H-1B visas for workers who have a master's degree or higher from a US university.
Non-selection notices are messages sent to people who applied for the H-1B visa but were not chosen because the cap was reached.
Cap-exempt petitions are requests for H-1B visas that are not limited by the cap, like extensions for current workers or changes in their job roles.
Specialty occupations are jobs that require special skills and knowledge, usually needing a college degree or higher, like in IT or engineering.
The H-1B Cap Season webpage is an online page where people can find updates and information about the H-1B visa application process.
