US and Taiwan Discuss Expanding Taiwan's Role in International Organizations
On January 8, 2025, officials from the United States and Taiwan met in Washington, D.C. to discuss ways to enhance Taiwan's participation in the United Nations and other international forums. The meeting was organized by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), with representatives from the U.S. Department of State and Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in attendance.
The discussions focused on opportunities for Taiwan to participate more actively in global public health bodies like the World Health Assembly (WHA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The participants also talked about Taiwan's involvement in non-UN international, regional, and multilateral organizations.
During the meeting, American representatives highlighted Taiwan's expertise and contributions in areas such as health, aviation safety, environmental protection, and law enforcement. They emphasized the importance of Taiwan's participation in the World Health Organization and ICAO.
All participants agreed on the need to collaborate with partners who are concerned about Taiwan's exclusion from the international community. The U.S. reiterated its support for Taiwan's involvement in international forums, aligning with its one China policy, which is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances.
