Farmers in Usta Muhammad and other regions of Balochistan, Pakistan, are worried about their crops due to a reduced water supply from Sindh. Balochistan, a dry area without major rivers, depends on the Indus River for irrigation. The Kirthar Canal, which connects Balochistan and Sindh, is experiencing a water shortage because of a drop in water levels at the Sukkur Barrage.
Mehrullah Ansari, the canal's executive engineer, explained that the water supply from the Sukkur Barrage has been affected by a sudden decrease in the pond level, which is crucial for feeding the canals. Sindh's Irrigation Department reported the pond level at 198.6RL and is taking emergency measures to restore the water supply.
Hakim Ali Jamali, a spokesperson for the farmers association, expressed concerns about the water shortage, noting that it usually affects crops during the Kharif season, but this is the first time it has happened during the Rabi season. He accused the Sindh Irrigation Department of intentionally harming Balochistan's agriculture by using the pond level as an excuse. Jamali warned that millions of acres of wheat crops could be destroyed if the issue is not resolved within a few days.
Jamali urged the Irrigation Secretary and Sindh Chief Minister to take immediate action to ensure water supply to Balochistan.
