New Delhi [India], June 28: Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced that an investigation has begun into the canopy collapse at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1. The incident, caused by heavy rain, resulted in one death and several injuries.
Naidu stated, "Investigation has begun. We will also bring experts from the department to investigate this. Action will be taken based on the report that will come." He also mentioned that all airport buildings across the country will be inspected to prevent such incidents in the future.
A compensation of 20 lakh rupees has been announced for the deceased and 3 lakh rupees for each injured person. The injured are being treated in hospitals. The collapsed building was an old structure inaugurated in 2009.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is monitoring the situation and has assured full support. Naidu inspected the site and ensured the safe evacuation of all passengers. Flights scheduled until 2 PM were canceled, with passengers receiving full refunds or rebooking options. Later flights will operate from Terminals 2 and 3.
Naidu emphasized that a thorough examination of the terminal's structure is being conducted by experts. Relevant agencies are working together to address the situation. The Minister also visited Safdarjung and AIIMS hospitals to meet the injured.
Naidu concluded, "We are committed to providing compensation to the family of the deceased and to those injured. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unfortunate event."
