UN Experts Urge China to Address Human Rights Violations in Tibet and East Turkestan

The letter from the UN experts specifically named nine Tibetans, including Tsedo, Kori, Chugdar, Gelo, Bhamo, Lobsang Samten, Lobsang Trinley, Wangkyi, and Tsering Tashi, who have been detained without clear charges or legal representation. The experts pointed out a pattern of human rights violations, including incommunicado detentions and suppression of cultural and religious expression.
The communication raised questions about the fairness of the arrests and detentions, urging the Chinese government to clarify the treatment of these individuals and whether investigations have been launched into their mistreatment. Reports also highlighted torture and inhumane treatment of detainees, with some dying due to abuse or lack of medical care.
The letter mentioned cases from recent years, such as the arrest of five Tibetans in August 2022 for religious activities. One individual, Chugdar, reportedly died in custody after being tortured. Concerns were also raised about four Tibetans arrested in September 2024, including religious figures Lobsang Samten and Lobsang Trinley.
The experts noted the Chinese government's crackdown on religious practices, with arrests for simple acts like possessing images of the Dalai Lama. The letter, signed by several UN special rapporteurs, called for immediate action from China to address these violations and provide clarity on the fate of the detained individuals.
