Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 25: Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury sharply reacted to Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury's letter accusing the government of privatizing the IGM Hospital in Agartala. Chowdhury criticized the opposition party CPIM for misleading the public ahead of the National Medical Council (NMC) delegates' visit.
Chowdhury stated, "No state government is empowered to approve proposals of setting up medical colleges in a state. NMC, formerly known as the Medical Council of India (MCI), is the only body capable of giving clearance to such proposals."
He added, "The NMC delegates are soon arriving to inspect the medical college site near Agartala. The Shantiniketan Medical College group, already involved in medical education, expressed interest in setting up a college here, and our government welcomed them. Everything is legal."
Chowdhury dismissed the CPI (M)'s allegations, noting that in many states, private medical colleges use government hospital infrastructure. He cited examples from Kerala and Bangalore where similar practices occur.
Discussing the World Health Organisation's standards for the doctor-patient ratio, Chowdhury said, "In cities like Pune, private medical colleges sign MoUs with government medical colleges for teaching purposes. Tripura, lagging behind WHO standards, needs private investments in the health sector."
He added, "The 225 seats at Agartala Government Medical College and Tripura Medical College are insufficient. We need one doctor for every thousand people, but we only have one doctor for over three thousand people. The current strength of 1,189 doctors in our health department is not enough."
Chowdhury clarified that the Shantiniketan Medical College group would not take over the entire administration of IGM Hospital. "They seek to ink an MoU with the Tripura health department to use IGM hospital for teaching purposes. Healthcare services will not be impacted," he added.
