India's Mission to UN Celebrates World Hindi Day in New York
On February 13, India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York celebrated World Hindi Day. The event focused on "Multilingualism and the promotion of Hindi abroad." Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, was the Guest of Honour. She spoke about the start of World Hindi Day on January 10, 2006, and emphasized India's diverse cultural fabric.
Thakur highlighted efforts to make Hindi more popular globally, noting that recognition by the United Nations would elevate its status. India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, mentioned that Hindi is now a non-official language at the UN. India has contributed around USD 7 million to support UN News in Hindi, and Harish expressed gratitude to the UN's Department of Global Communications for their assistance.
Melissa Fleming, the UN's Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, acknowledged Hindi's significance with 600 million speakers. She mentioned the Hindi@UN project and social media initiatives to connect with Hindi speakers. Academics at the event discussed promoting Hindi in the US, emphasizing the role of multilingualism, media, and technology in expanding Hindi content online.
The event was attended by UN officials, language enthusiasts, and representatives from Indian institutions. World Hindi Day, initiated by the Indian government in January 2006, aims to promote Hindi globally and is celebrated annually worldwide.
