This incident is one of the worst aviation disasters in South Korea's history, following the 1997 Korean Air crash in Guam. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which had departed from Bangkok, veered off the runway while attempting to land, crashing into a concrete wall and bursting into flames.
Authorities confirmed 177 fatalities, with two crew members rescued. Search operations continue for the missing individuals. The crash left the aircraft nearly destroyed, complicating victim identification. A temporary morgue has been set up at Muan Airport.
Most passengers were Korean, with two Thai nationals among them. The ages ranged from three to 78 years old. Only two crew members survived, receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
A potential landing gear failure, possibly due to a bird strike, is suspected as a cause. The airport's control tower had warned of a bird strike minutes before the crash, and the pilot issued a "Mayday" distress signal.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok declared Muan a special disaster zone and visited the site. Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae apologized and promised support for the victims' families.
