Thunderstorms Expected in Tamil Nadu: IMD Issues Safety Advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate thunderstorms and lightning in several districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday. Areas such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Villupuram, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience these weather conditions. Meanwhile, districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Karur, Kallakurichi, and Chengalpattu may see light thunderstorms until 10 AM today.
In Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur, light to moderate rain is anticipated. The regional weather office warns of potential waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and minor damage to loose structures.

The IMD advises residents to stay indoors, avoid travel, and ensure children and animals are safe inside. Loose timber or debris should be secured to prevent accidents. If outside, people should avoid metal structures, utility lines, and trees. It’s also recommended to stay away from electrical conductors, windows, doors, and avoid using corded phones.
For those caught in a storm while traveling, the IMD suggests seeking shelter on land if boating or swimming, and remaining in vehicles until the storm passes. Importantly, individuals struck by lightning do not carry an electrical charge and can be safely assisted to reach medical help.
