New Delhi, India – Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin has made history by becoming the first woman to be appointed as the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). She took over the position on Tuesday, according to an official press release.

Career Highlights

Vice Admiral Sarin has had an illustrious career spanning 38 years. She has served in all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces, holding various significant positions:

  • Director General of Medical Services in the Navy
  • Director General of Medical Services in the Air Force
  • Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune

An alumnus of AFMC, Pune, she was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1985. She holds an MD in Radiodiagnosis from AFMC, Pune, and a Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. She also received training in Gamma Knife Surgery from the University of Pittsburgh.
